A gear motor is a combination of an electric motor and a certain number of gears. The main purpose of this industrial motor is to reduce the motor speed while maintaining high torque. Gears are combined with a motor in order to lower the motor speed while increasing the output torque. The main advantages of gear motors include:

This type of motors are classified in a number of ways, according to different criteria. One of the main division is based on the power source requirements of the motor. Hence there are two general types of gear motors: AC motors and DC motors. The type of motor powering has impact on several factors, that determine the performance of the motor. Such factors are reliability, maintenance and operating cost as well as complexity of speed control.
 
Another factor according to which these motors are classified in several different types is the gear system arrangement. Depending on the number, type and arrangement of the gears, there are: spur gear motors, planetary gear motors, worm gear motors and bevel gear motors.
 
Planetary gear motors are some of the most common type of motors used in industrial applications. What characterizes the planetary type of gear system is the multiple planetary gears which rotate around one central (also called “sun”) gear. The planetary gear motors generate a rotating motion, that can reduce the speed and increase the torque in industrial motors used in mid-level precision industry, in applications such as automation assembly.

   -Risk of reducing the lifespan of the planetary gear motors if used for slow operations.
